Trusting God’s Promise

Imagine your family is going on a trip, but your parents will not tell you exactly where you are going. You pack your bag, get in the car, and start driving. You may wonder, “Where are we going? How long will it take? What will it be like?” You might feel nervous because you do not know the whole plan. But if you trust the person leading you, you can still go.

That is a little like what happened to Abram. God told him to leave his home and go to a land God would show him. Abram did not have a map or all the details. He only had God’s promise. God promised to bless Abram and to use him to bless people all over the world. Abram believed God, obeyed him, and worshiped him. We can trust God too because his greatest promise has come true in Jesus. Through Jesus, God gives forgiveness, new life, and hope to everyone who believes.

Read Genesis 12:1-9

Discussion Questions
  1. What did God promise Abram in this passage?
  2. What did Abram do that showed he trusted God, even though he did not know everything that would happen?
  3. How has God blessed us through Jesus, and how can we be a blessing to someone else this week?

Activity: Promise Walk
Choose one person to be the leader. The leader gives everyone simple directions for a short walk around the house or yard, but does not reveal the final destination. Everyone has to follow one direction at a time. At the end, talk about how Abram followed God without knowing the whole plan. Then have each person name one promise of God that your family can remember and trust this week.
