Mercy and Judgment

God's Mercy to the Rescue!
Have you ever been in trouble and needed someone to help you? Maybe you got stuck somewhere, fell off your bike, or got lost in a store. How did you feel when someone came to rescue you? In the Bible, we read about a man named Lot who needed rescuing. Lot lived in a city called Sodom, where people were doing terrible things. God was going to punish the city because of its wickedness. But God showed mercy to Lot and his family. He sent angels to warn them and lead them to safety. Even when Lot was slow to leave, the angels took him by the hand and helped him escape. That's what God's mercy looks like! We are all sinners who deserve God's judgment, but God loves us so much that he sent Jesus to rescue us. We can't save ourselves, but we can trust Jesus to save us!

Read Genesis 19:12–17

Discussion Questions
  1. Why did God send angels to rescue Lot and his family? What does that teach us about God?
  2. Lot was slow to obey, but God still showed him mercy. Can you think of a time when you were slow to obey? How does God show us mercy when we sin?
  3. How is Jesus like the angels who rescued Lot? What has Jesus come to rescue us from?

Activity: Rescue Mission!
Choose one family member to be the "rescuer" and everyone else to be "trapped" in different places around the house. The rescuer must find each person, take them by the hand, and lead them to a designated "safe place." Take turns being the rescuer until everyone has had a chance. When you're finished, talk about how Lot needed someone to lead him to safety. Remind everyone that Jesus is our greatest Rescuer. He came to save us from sin and bring us safely into God's family!

41. What is the Lord’s Prayer?
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Memory Verse
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
