Family Worship (Aug 31)

Love is a Verb

Have you ever heard someone say, “I love pizza!” or “I love my video game”? We use the word “love” a lot, don’t we? But in the Bible, love is not just something we say—it’s something we do. Imagine if you told your mom or dad, “I love you,” but you never helped clean up, never listened, and never gave them a hug. Would they really feel loved? Real love shows up in actions.

The Bible tells us that God showed His love for us by sending Jesus. That’s the biggest action of love ever! And now, God calls us to love others with action too. That means being kind to our friends, helping strangers, and welcoming people who might feel left out. Love is more than a word—it’s a verb.

Hebrews 13:1–2
1 Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. 2 Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.

Discussion Questions
What’s the difference between just saying “I love you” and actually showing love?
How do you think someone feels when they are welcomed and included?
What’s one way our family can show God’s love to someone new or someone who feels left out?

Activity
“Hospitality Role-Play”
As a family, take turns pretending to be a “guest” who comes to your house for the first time. The rest of the family should practice showing love and hospitality—offering a seat, asking questions, sharing food or water, or just being kind. Afterward, talk about how it felt to be welcomed.

(You can even practice this with stuffed animals or dolls for younger kids—pretend they’re visitors coming to the house!)

Prayer
Dear God, thank You for showing Your love to us by sending Jesus. Help us to remember that real love is more than words—it’s actions. Teach our family to welcome others, to be kind, and to love even strangers, just as You have loved us. Make our home and our hearts open to others so they can see Jesus in us. Amen.
