Family Worship (Feb 16)
The Spirit & the Word
Imagine you’re sitting together at a Fourth of July fireworks show. The sky lights up with amazing colors—reds, blues, and greens. Everyone says, “Wow!” But what if, after the fireworks ended, you didn’t even remember why you were there? Fireworks are exciting, but they’re just a sign of a bigger celebration—freedom.
The same thing happened at Pentecost. When the Holy Spirit came, there were amazing signs like tongues of fire and people speaking different languages. But those signs pointed to something even bigger: the good news about Jesus. Right after the Holy Spirit came, Peter stood up and preached a sermon that taught everyone about Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection.
Acts 2:36–39 (NIV)
Peter said, “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
Discussion Questions
Activity: “Pentecost Passport”
Create a “Pentecost Passport” by folding a piece of paper in half and writing “Pentecost Passport” on the front. Inside, write “Jesus loves you” in different languages (e.g., Spanish: Jesús te ama, French: Jésus t’aime). Take a “mission walk” through your home, pretending each room is a different country. In each “country,” read the phrase together and pray for people around the world to know Jesus. Afterwards, discuss how the Holy Spirit gave the disciples power at Pentecost to share the gospel with all nations—and how we can share that same message today.
Prayer
Dear God, thank You for sending the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. We are amazed at the power You gave to Peter and the others to preach the gospel. Help us remember that the greatest miracle that day wasn’t the tongues of fire or different languages but the good news of Jesus being preached. Give our family the power to share Your love with others and live in a way that shows we follow Jesus. Thank You for Your Spirit, who lives in us and helps us every day. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

New City Catechism
7. What does the law of God require?
That we love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength; and love our neighbor as ourselves.
Romans 6:23 (ESV)
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
