Treasures that Last

Introduction:
Imagine your family is building a treasure chest together. What kinds of treasures would you want to put inside? Maybe shiny gold coins, sparkling jewels, or even a favorite toy. But what if you found out that this treasure chest couldn’t last forever? The gold might tarnish, the jewels could crack, and the toys would wear out. In today’s passage, Jesus teaches us about a special kind of treasure—one that never breaks, fades, or disappears. Let’s discover how we can build a treasure chest for God’s Kingdom that lasts forever!

Scripture: Matthew 6:19–21 (NIV)
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Discussion Questions:
  1. What does Jesus mean by “treasures on earth”? Can you think of examples?
  2. What do you think “treasures in heaven” are? How do we store them up?
  3. Why does Jesus say that your heart is where your treasure is?
  4. How can we tell if something is becoming too important to us?
  5. As a family, what are some ways we can store up treasures in heaven this week?

Interactive Activity: “Family Treasure Hunt”
  • Create a Treasure Map: Write or draw clues around the house that lead to a hidden treasure box (this could be an actual box filled with encouraging notes, a Bible verse, or small treats).
  • Connect the Treasure: When the family finds the box, talk about how earthly treasures can fade (use examples like worn-out toys or old gadgets) but treasures in heaven last forever.
  • Make a Family Treasure Chest: On slips of paper, have each family member write or draw one way they can “store treasures in heaven” (e.g., showing kindness, helping a neighbor, praying, or giving to those in need). Add these slips to a decorative box you keep in a visible spot as a reminder of your family’s eternal priorities.

Prayer:
Dear God, thank You for teaching us about treasures that last forever. Help us to focus on what really matters—loving You, serving others, and living for Your Kingdom. Show us how we can store up treasures in heaven as a family. Change our hearts so they will always treasure You most. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

New City Catechism:
4. How and why did God create us?
God created us male and female in his own image to glorify him.

Psalm 145:8–9 (ESV)
The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The LORD is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.
