Family Worship (Sept 28)

Pride and God’s Promise

Have you ever seen a superhero movie where the “bad guy” thinks he can’t be beaten? He brags, shows off, and thinks he is the strongest person in the world. But in the end, he always loses because pride makes him blind. That’s kind of what happened with a nation in the Bible called Edom. They thought they were untouchable because their homes were high in the mountains. They laughed at God’s people when Babylon attacked, and they even joined in the hurt. But God gave them a “Code Red” warning through the prophet Obadiah: Your pride will bring you down.
This sounds scary, but it’s also good news. God shows us that pride and sin lead to judgment, but He also promises rescue and hope. Just like a superhero saves the day, Jesus came to save us. He took the punishment we deserve and gave us His love and forgiveness.

Obadiah 1:3–4 (NIV)
3 The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks and make your home on the heights, you who say to yourself, “Who can bring me down to the ground?” 4 Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord.

Discussion Questions
  1. Why do you think pride can be so dangerous to our hearts and relationships?
  2. Can you think of a time when you felt too proud or thought you were better than someone else? What happened?
  3. How does Jesus show us the opposite of pride, and how can we follow His example?

Activity: “Build It Up, Bring It Down”
Take some building blocks (Legos, Jenga, or even cups).
As a family, build the tallest tower you can. Talk about how the Edomites thought their high homes made them safe.
Then, let one person carefully knock the tower down. Discuss how pride can make us feel “tall” and “strong,” but God is the one who is really in control.
End by building something small together, like a house, and talk about how Jesus builds us up with love and humility instead of pride.

Prayer
Dear God, thank You for warning us about pride. We don’t want to live like Edom, thinking we are better than others. Help us to be humble like Jesus, who gave His life for us. Thank You that even when we sin, You promise forgiveness and new life through Him. Teach our family to build our lives on Jesus, not on pride. In His name we pray, Amen.

Memory Work

New City Catechism
39. With what attitude should we pray?
With love, perseverance, and gratefulness; in humble submission to God’s will, knowing that, for the sake of Christ, he always hears our prayers.

Memory Verse
Joel 3:16 (NIV)
"The Lord will roar from Zion and thunder from Jerusalem; the earth and the heavens will tremble. But the Lord will be a refuge for his people, a stronghold for the people of Israel."
