Small Things, Big God
Have you ever tried to build something with blocks or LEGOs and felt like it was taking forever? Maybe you started a huge castle, but after five minutes it still looked tiny. Or maybe you were helping clean the house, and even though you worked hard, it still looked messy. When things feel small or slow, we can get discouraged and think, “Does this even matter? Is this making a difference?”
God’s people in the book of Zechariah felt the same way. They had a big job—rebuilding God’s temple—but the work was slow, hard, and unimpressive. Some people even made fun of them! But God sent a message to encourage them: “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,” and “Do not despise the day of small things.”
God loves to use small things—small jobs, small people, small moments—to do big work. He is strong even when we feel weak, and He is working even when we can’t see it yet.
Zechariah 4:6–10
“Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,” says the Lord Almighty. “What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground… The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Who dares despise the day of small things?”
Discussion
Activity: “Small Things Tower Challenge”
Supplies: 10–20 small household items (blocks, coins, cotton balls, LEGO pieces, etc.)
Instructions: Set a timer for two minutes. As a family, try to build the tallest tower possible using only the small items. When the timer ends, step back and look at your creation.
Talk about it: Did the tower look small at first? How did it grow? What small actions helped it become tall?
Explain that God builds His kingdom the same way—through small acts of love, small prayers, small obediences, and simple faithfulness. God sees it all.
Prayer
Father, thank You for being a God who uses small things to do great things. Help us trust Your Spirit when we feel weak or discouraged. Teach us not to despise small moments, but to honor You in everything we do. Make our family a place where Your love grows every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Memory Work
New City Catechism
45. Is baptism with water the washing away of sin itself?
No, only the blood of Christ and the renewal of the Holy Spirit can cleanse us from sin.
Memory Verse
Colossians 1:16b-17 (CSB)
All things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and by him all things hold together.

Discussion
- What is something in your life that feels small or unimportant—but might matter a lot to God?
- Why do you think God says His work happens “not by might… but by my Spirit”?
- How can our family remember that God uses small moments to build His big kingdom?
