The Greatest King in the Smallest Town
Have you ever played on a team where no one expected the smallest or quietest kid to make a big play? Maybe everyone looked at the biggest player or the fastest runner—but then the kid no one noticed stepped up and surprised everyone. That’s often how God works! When people choose leaders or heroes, they usually look for the person who seems strong, important, or impressive. But God sees something deeper. He looks at the heart.
In the Bible, God chose a tiny town called Bethlehem to be the birthplace of Jesus. Bethlehem wasn’t famous or powerful. It wasn’t a big city like Jerusalem. It was small—so small that most people didn’t think anything great could come from it. But God loves using small places and humble people to show his greatness.
In today’s passage, God teaches us that real greatness isn’t about being popular or strong. Real greatness is a humble heart that worships Jesus.
Micah 5:2 (NIV)
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”
Discussion Questions
Activity — “Small but Strong”
Materials: A small item from around the house (a tiny stone, a small toy, a seed, or even a LEGO brick).
Steps: Have everyone hold the small item. Talk about how something little can still be very important. A tiny seed grows into a big tree. A small LEGO brick can be the final piece that holds a whole structure together. Now walk together to the manger scene (if you have one) or look at a picture of Jesus’ birth. Say together: “God uses small things to show his greatness!” Invite each family member to name one humble or simple way they can worship Jesus this week—helping someone, praying, sharing, or giving thanks.
Prayer
Jesus, thank you for coming to us in a humble way—in a small town, as a small baby, to be our great King. Help our family remember that you care about our hearts more than how strong or important we seem. Teach us to show real greatness by worshiping you with humble hearts. Make us more like you every day. Amen.

New City Catechism
49. Where is Christ now?
Christ rose bodily from the grave on the third day after his death and is seated at the right hand of the Father, ruling his kingdom and interceding for us, until he returns to judge and renew the whole world.
Memory Verse
Galatians 3:29 (CSB)
And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to the promise.
