Knowing the Unknown

Have you ever tried to solve a mystery? Maybe you played a game where you had to figure out who took the last cookie, or you looked for clues to find a hidden treasure. It can be fun to search for answers, but what if the answer was right in front of you all along? In Acts 17, Paul visits a city called Athens where people are searching for God in all kinds of ways—they even have a statue for an “Unknown God”! But Paul tells them that God doesn’t want to be a mystery. God wants us to know Him! He’s not hiding, and He made everything so that we could find Him. Just like you love when your family knows you and calls you by name, God loves for us to know Him and call out to Him. Let’s discover how God makes Himself known to us!

Acts 17:24-27 (NIV)
“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands… He himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else… God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.”

Discussion Questions
  1. Why do you think the people in Athens built a statue to an “Unknown God”?
  2. What does this passage tell us about where God is and how close He is to us?
  3. How can you look for God or talk to Him in your everyday life?

Activity: “God Is Not Far” Hide and Seek
Play a quick game of hide and seek in your living room, but this time, make it easy—everyone hides somewhere they can still be seen. When the game is over, talk about how, just like you weren’t really far from each other, God is never far from us. You don’t have to search hard or be afraid—He wants you to find Him and talk to Him!

Prayer
Dear God, thank You for making us and for wanting us to know You. Thank You that You are never far away. Help us to look for You, talk to You, and remember that You love us and want to be close to us. Show us more of who You are every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Memory Work:

New City Catechism
16. What is sin?
Sin is rejecting or ignoring God in the world he created, rebelling against him by living without reference to him, not being or doing what he requires in his law—resulting in our death and the disintegration of all creation.

Ezekiel 36:26
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.
