No Love Lost

Have you ever played a game where someone didn’t follow the rules? Maybe they cheated or were unfair, and it ruined the fun for everyone. That’s kind of what was happening in Micah’s time. The leaders of Israel—the people who were supposed to help and protect others—were being unfair and selfish. Instead of using their power to do good, they were hurting the people they led.
But here’s the amazing part: even when God’s people were unfair, God didn’t stop loving them. He sent the prophet Micah to tell them the truth and to call them back to His ways. God’s love is so strong that He will even correct us when we’re wrong, so that we can come back to Him. Through Jesus, God shows us that His justice and His love always go together—He never gives up on His people!

Micah 3:9–11 (NIV)
“Hear this, you leaders of Jacob, you rulers of Israel, who despise justice and distort all that is right; who build Zion with bloodshed, and Jerusalem with wickedness. Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money. Yet they look for the Lord’s support and say, ‘Is not the Lord among us? No disaster will come upon us.’”

Discussion Questions
  1. Why do you think God was upset with the leaders in Micah’s time?
  2. How does God’s correction show that He still loves His people?
  3. How does Jesus show us what good and loving leadership looks like?

Activity: “Fair and Unfair”
Grab two sheets of paper and some markers. On one paper, write “UNFAIR.” On the other, write “FAIR.”
Now take turns describing different situations—some fair, some unfair. For example:
  • “A teacher gives candy only to kids she likes.” (Unfair!)
  • “A friend helps you when you fall down.” (Fair!)
After each example, hold up the right paper. Then talk about what makes something fair or unfair, and how God wants His people to act with fairness and kindness.
End the game by talking about how Jesus is the fairest and most loving leader—He gave His life so we could all be treated with grace and mercy.

Prayer
Dear God, thank You that You care about what is right and fair. When we do wrong, help us listen to Your correction and come back to You. Thank You for sending Jesus, who leads with love and justice. Help our family live in a way that shows Your kindness to others. Amen.

Memory Work

New City Catechism
41. What is the Lord’s Prayer?
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Memory Verse
2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
