Living by Faith

Have you ever had a time when something didn’t make sense, but you had to trust anyway? Maybe you studied hard for a test and didn’t get the grade you hoped for. Or maybe you prayed for something, but God didn’t answer right away. That’s kind of what happened to a man named Habakkuk in the Bible. He looked around and saw bad things happening, and it felt like God wasn’t doing anything about it. Habakkuk was confused and even a little upset. But instead of walking away from God, he kept talking to Him. And by the end of his story, Habakkuk had learned to trust God even when everything around him was falling apart. God helped him see that faith means believing that God is good and in control—no matter what we see or feel. That’s what it means to live by faith.

Habakkuk 3:17–18 (NIV)
17 Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will be joyful in God my Savior.

Discussion Questions
  1. Why do you think Habakkuk was able to be joyful even when everything was going wrong?
  2. What does it mean to “live by faith” in your own life?
  3. Can you think of a time when God helped you trust Him even when things didn’t make sense?

Activity – “Faith Walk”
You’ll need a blindfold and some space in a room or outside.
Have one person wear the blindfold while another person gives gentle directions to help them walk across the room or yard safely. The person wearing the blindfold must listen carefully and trust the voice guiding them.

Afterward, talk about how it felt to walk without seeing. What helped you trust the person guiding you? How is this like trusting God when we can’t see what He’s doing?

Remind everyone that faith means trusting God’s voice even when the path ahead isn’t clear. We can trust Him because He is good, wise, and loving.

Prayer
Lord, thank You for being a God we can trust. Even when things are hard or confusing, You are still good and in control. Help our family live by faith—listening to Your voice, trusting Your promises, and finding joy in You no matter what happens. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Memory Work

New City Catechism
43. What are the sacraments or ordinances?
The sacraments or ordinances given by God and instituted by Christ, namely baptism and the Lord’s Supper, are visible signs and seals that we are bound together as a community of faith by his death and resurrection. By our use of them the Holy Spirit more fully declares and seals the promises of the gospel to us.

Memory Verse
2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
