Family Worship (Sept 13)

Imagine your family was given a giant box of LEGO bricks and one challenge: build the greatest city in the world. What would you add? Huge skyscrapers? Roller coasters? Robot helpers? Maybe every house would have a swimming pool! Building and inventing things can be great. God made us creative. But what if you started thinking, “If we can build enough cool things, we won’t need God anymore”? That was the problem at Babel. The people discovered a better way to make bricks, built a city, and planned a giant tower. They wanted to make themselves important and safe without trusting God. So God came down and stopped them. But God had an even better plan. Many years later, Jesus came down from heaven to save us from our pride and sin. Our hope is not in what we can build or accomplish. Our hope is in what God has done for us through Jesus.

Discussion Questions

1. Why did the people want to build the city and tower, and what does that tell us about their hearts?
2. What did God do when he saw what the people were building? How did he use their scattering to accomplish his purposes?
3. What are some things we might trust to make us happy, important, or safe instead of trusting God?

Activity
Tower Challenge: Divide into two teams and give each team the same number of blocks, cups, or other stackable objects. Set a timer for three minutes and see who can build the tallest tower. Afterward, knock both towers down! Talk about how even our greatest accomplishments cannot give us lasting security. Then have everyone work together to build one final structure. As you build, name things God has given your family that remind you to depend on him rather than yourselves.
